Behind the scenes of a wedding photographer – 10/25/08 wedding

It’s been some time since my last “behind the scenes” photo, so let’s check out a photo from Michelle & Brad’s  Rochester, Minnesota wedding which took place at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. We’ve probably all seen a Grand Exit at a wedding where usually everyone is lined up and throwing rice as the Bride & Groom take their first walk in public as a married couple.

I know that there was concern that rice was harmful to some birds, but I think it’s a toss-up between urban legend and a flat out insurance liability concern for the church/venue of the ceremony. Since then, probably even before the bird “scare”, there have been rice substitutes such as seeds, flower pedals & blowing bubbles.

At Michelle & Brad’s wedding, they opted to use bubbles. Bubbles can have such a cool & unique color to them, which can add to the look of the picture. Here’s a photo taken by Joni Neiman during their Grand Exit:

Obviously, you can see me walking backwards in front of the happily married couple, shooting blind. Yes, there are definitely times when I don’t look through the viewfinder while shooting. Once you’ve become so familiar with using a camera & lens, you can use it without looking through the viewfinder. It is a technique I used quite frequently!

Here’s two pictures from their exit – the first photo was taken just as they walked out. Notice the color in the bubbles!

and this next photo was taken at nearly the same time as Joni’s picture was taken. You can see her husband holding the camera up in the background to the left of Michelle…

Pretty neat huh??

Remember, I’d love to feature anyone’s wedding photo that has me in the photo somewhere. Chances are likely that I took a photo around, if not at, the same time!

Behind the Scenes of a wedding photographer from June 2008

Thank you to the number of family & friends who have supplied & allowed me to use their own wedding pictures to use in my “Behind the Scenes” pages. It’s nice to see different perspectives between multiple photos taken at or close to the same time.

Here’s a wedding photo from June 2008 taken by wonderful wedding guest & reader, Taylor Addington, a friend of my clients – Maria & Fran. It was taken at the wedding reception at the La Crosse Center Ballroom during the garter removal. The story behind the photo is Maria always gave Fran a hard time about wearing his own cowboy boots. Without him knowing, she managed to put on some cowboy boots of her own to surprise him during the garter removal. Truly a fun moment for everyone at the wedding reception! Check out Fran’s reaction! Priceless!!

If you, or you know of someone who may have some wedding photos with me working, let me know! I’d love to feature them here!

October 25th, 2008 – For my last scheduled wedding of 2008, I was back in Rochester, MN for the wedding of Michelle & Brad at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. It was a cool, but beautiful autumn day and just perfect for a wedding. There had been reports of possible snowfall, but there wasn’t any sign of that on their wedding day!

Michelle & Brad decided not to see each other prior to their ceremony so I was able to get some preparation & getting ready photos of both of them prior to the ceremony. It’s always kind of fun & exciting trying to “hide” the bride & groom from each other. There are times when you think you start to hear the “Mission Impossible” theme song playing as you peek around corners & walking down hallways. Continue reading about their Rochester MN wedding

Jane & Kevin wedding photographer | La Crosse, Wisconsin

October 18th, 2009 – I traveled to La Crosse, WI on a cool, foggy Saturday morning to the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Workman to photograph the wedding of my clients, Jane & Kevin, from Chicago, IL. Jane was originally from La Crosse and came home for her wedding.

One thing I notice when it happens to be cool or cold outside on a wedding day, is when I arrive at my location, the temperature doesn’t seem to bother anybody. I wonder if that’s from the love between two people about to get married…. that I just do not know for sure, but it is something that I notice.

After Jane & Kevin saw each other for the first time, I started with their portraits prior to the wedding ceremony. The Cathedral is a beautiful church…

After the ceremony, they both proudly walked down the aisle as husband & wife…

After family & bridal party portraits, before going to The Waterfront Restaurant for the wedding reception, we headed to Riverside Park for some outdoor photos to capture some of the beautiful autumn colors. I can tell that these two are so much in love, always looking at each other & smiling…

We then arrived at The Waterfront and after greeting their guests individually, dinner and toasts – it was time for their dance to begin. They provided dance instructors to teach the guests swing dancing! They also had a seven piece live band to play music to fit…

After the swing dancing lessons, it was time for Jane & Kevin’s first dance. I could tell they took a few lessons at some point as it was a beautiful first dance…

And then the dancefloor opened up to all the guests and they danced the night away. I could tell a good time was had by all…

It was such a pleasure to be of service to you both, Jane & Kevin! I thank you for allowing me to share your beautiful wedding day with each of you and all of your family & friends! I wish you both a happy & healthy future full of love together…

Vanessa & Andy engagement photographer | La Crosse, Wisconsin

October 12th, 2008 – My third engagement session of the weekend was right in downtown La Crosse, WI with a very fun couple. Vanessa & Andy are going to have a HUGE wedding party as there will be 10 bridesmaids & groomsmen on each side! That doesn’t include ushers, flower girl, ring bearer & mini bride…

If their wedding party is anything like Vanessa & Andy, which I’m sure they are, this will be one wedding to remember! They are very down to earth and have so much fun when they’re together. Always laughing & smiling. The best part – they are two people in love.

We chose the downtown setting as they were looking for a different, more unique look to their engagement photos. They didn’t want to go to Riverside Park or have the autumn/fall themed look to their photos. That’s when I suggested a more urban look with downtown La Crosse. The results turned out AWESOME!

Jill & Justin engagement photographer | Taylors Falls, Minnesota

October 11th, 2008 – My second engagement shoot over the weekend took place near the Wisconsin border at the edge of the St. Croix River in Taylors Falls, MN. What a location to see some beautiful autumn colors as well as some real natural outdoor beauty! And then to be able to photograph two people in love there – even better!! Jill & Justin love the outdoors and shooting at Interstate State Park was a perfect fit for them.

I’ve never been to Taylors Falls before, but after shooting there – I hope to return! The landscape there is so much different than southeastern Minnesota. It’s amazing how within a few hours drive how much the terrain can change. Needless to say, I’m pumped to be able to show their awesome engagement photos from there! Check ‘em out!!

The sun came out and really warmed the morning up… needless to say, the photos warmed up too!

Again, the rock formations at the park were awesome. Jill & Justin were even more awesome as they weren’t afraid to climb out into certain areas to make some unbelievable images…

You two were great, seriously!!! I mean c’mon everyone, check out this next photo – that is love…

Rebecca & James engagement photographer | St. Joseph, Minnesota

October 10th, 2008 – My first of three wedding engagement portrait sessions over this past weekend took place near St. Cloud, MN in St. Joseph, MN on the campus St. John’s University where Rebecca & James met and fell in love. I think its great to go somewhere for portraits that has a special meaning to my clients. I feel it gives photos even more meaning for my clients. These two were great and we had fun during their session. I even got a small guided tour of St. John’s campus while shooting – thanks James!

Let’s check out some of their pics from a beautiful, fall Friday evening….

The leaves are truly beautiful at this time of year in Minnesota…

They really “pop” on this digitally enhanced image…

We then traveled over to the College of St. Benedict to shoot at the library as that was where James proposed to Rebecca by strategically placing a hollowed out book on the shelf with her ring and a photo of the two of them. (take notes guys!!) We shot at the exact spot. It was pretty fun shooting in a place that you’re supposed to be quiet in. All you hear is the sound of the shutter from the camera as it echoes through the library. ; )

It was a pleasure to meet you both and can’t wait for your wedding next year, Rebecca & James!

Lindsay & Scott wedding photographer – La Crosse, Wisconsin

October 4th, 2008 – It was a beautiful Autumn day and just perfect for an outdoor wedding at the International Gardens at Riverside Park in La Crosse, Wisconsin. While you could hear the sounds & music from Oktoberfest a few blocks away, you could tell that the Fall season was upon us. Almost a year to the day, Scott had surprised and proposed to Lindsay at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, MN – where they have a photo and plaque displayed there. Scott wanted me to shoot the proposal for him that day, however, I had a wedding already booked for that day. No matter, their wedding was a beautiful one, in a beautiful setting, with beautiful weather, filled with family & close friends and most of all – two people in love.

I started with Scott and the groomsmen as Lindsay was arriving at the start of the cermony. Here is Scott’s best man getting his collar adjusted by Lindsay’s brother, who was her “man of honor”…

If you ever go to Riverside Park, you need to visit the International Gardens, which is located on the north end of the Park. It’s a beautifully landscaped area. The scene of the ceremony was very natural…

They both wrote letters to each other to be read by the officiant during the ceremony. Such beautiful words were read and tears of happiness ran down Lindsay’s cheek while Scott’s letter was read to her…

After the ceremony, we finished up pictures with the bridal party and family. While taking Lindsay & Scott’s portraits, I noticed the sun shining between them after I had told them to hold hands. The end result is a very beautiful image…

Even though the leaves still hadn’t completely changed, there was still a few which had already fallen off the trees, which made for a perfect Autumn themed portrait…

They then boarded the La Crosse Queen for their wedding reception paddleboat cruise. It was a brisk, autumn evening on the Mississippi River, however it did not stop the guests from having a wonderful time. Whether inside or out, everyone had a great time celebrating Lindsay & Scott’s marriage. Here’s a shot of their first dance…

Then a good amount of people headed to the upper level and braved the cool autumn night air and danced the night away as we floated up & down the Mississippi River until we docked back at the La Crosse levee.

I was pleased to be a part of your beautiful wedding, Lindsay & Scott. I wish you both many more days of happiness & love together and hope every day is the next best day for each of you!

Marie & Dan wedding photographer – Rochester, Minnesota

September 27th, 2008 – The second wedding I shot over this past weekend took place at the Church of St. John the Evangelist near the Mayo Clinic campus in downtown Rochester. A beautiful day, with a beautiful wedding that took place at a beautiful church.

I met with Marie and her bridesmaids downstairs as she was getting ready. Her sister and mother were right there to help as the bridesmaids watched Marie transform from a girl getting married to a beautiful bride…

After some last minute touch ups, she was ready to see Dan for the first time. I arranged to have Dan wait for Marie in the sanctuary before she walked in. It was a very tender moment…

After that, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and the wonderful courtyard outside for some intimate portraits…

I’m always looking for different angles to make an awesome photo…

We then headed back in to take care of family portraits as well as the bridal party portraits. I headed back downstairs to check on Marie and the bridesmaids. Next thing you know, it was time for the wedding ceremony to begin. The bridesmaids left and then it was Marie’s turn to go upstairs and meet her father…

The church was almost completely full of guests and the ceremony was beautiful. As Marie & Dan walked back up the aisle, their faces were beaming with joy. During the receiving line, Marie and her sister shared a second hug & some laughs. I love the emotion it shows…

Before going to the wedding reception at the Rochester MN Marriott Hotel Ballroom, the whole wedding party made a couple of stops for a little “pre-celebration”. I could tell a good time was going to get better at the reception!

The wedding reception was packed with family & friends, food & drinks, speeches & laughter as well as love from everyone in the room for Marie & Dan. After dinner, the dance began with their first dance as husband & wife. A beautiful dance it was…

Stacy & Rich wedding photographer – Holmen, Wisconsin

September 26th, 2008 – My first wedding of the weekend was on a Friday and I went to Drugan’s Castle Mound Country Club for an outdoor wedding on the outskirts of the golf course. It was a warm, Autumn afternoon and the colors for the wedding fit perfectly…

As I arrived, I met with Stacy in her dressing room and she was adding some finishing touches with her bridesmaids…

After the ceremony, we used the beautiful scenery of the golf course to create some great wedding portraits…

After photos, we headed back to the Grand Norway banquet facility where the wedding reception was being held. After dinner and toasts, the dance began and the fun continued. Stacy & Rich’s first dance was filled with smiles of happiness…

While it was a tad warm and the gnats came out while taking family portraits – it was still a beautiful wedding nonetheless. Love really is one of those things that will outlast some of life’s inconveniences – big or small. The tears, laughter & smiles proved that last Friday with Stacy & Rich. I wish you both a wonderful future together for many, many years to come! Congratulations again!!
