Janelle & Steve wedding photographer – Winona, MN & La Crosse, WI

September 20th, 2008 – I drove down to the Winona Levee to board the Julia Belle Swain for the wedding of Janelle & Steve. It was a picture perfect day which made for a great day for a wedding as well as a ride on a paddleboat ride up & down the Mississippi River.

It’s not every day you go on a ride in a paddleboat and then to have your wedding on one is pretty cool! It was a wedding consisting of close family and friends. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate your wedding while going for a paddleboat cruise with the ones you love most.

Here are a few photos from their beautiful wedding day…

The story of how Steve proposed was very special as well. As the story goes, Janelle was unable to wear rings to work so she told Steve that she just wanted a $9.99 ring from Wal-Mart. He said once he found $9.99 worth of pennies, only face up, he would propose. The day of his proposal he picked her up and they went out to eat. As they returned to the vehicle, Steve had found a penny on the ground. Janelle had mentioned that he should count up his pennies to see where he was at. As they arrived at her apartment, to Janelle’s surprise, there was $9.98 worth of pennies, face up, in a heart shape on her table. Steve placed the last needed face-up penny to the heart shape and knelt down on one knee to propose…

It was my pleasure to be your wedding photographer, Janelle & Steve! I wish you both the best!!! Congratulations again!

Erica & Dustin engagement photographer – La Crosse, Wisconsin

September 17th, 2008 – I met with my 1st wedding of 2009 clients, Erica & Dustin, for their engagement portrait session in La Crosse, WI. We had a great time and laughed a lot. (you two know what I’m talking about..) We had actually met before as they were “designated cake cutters” for my clients, Kasey & Andy, who married last year. (Hi Kasey & Andy!)

These two are a very fun couple and I feel their engagement photos show it, as well as the love for one another. I know their wedding will be fun too. They are just that fun – for real!!

Here’s preview of their photos:

Katie & Victor wedding photographer – Owatonna, Minnesota

September 13th, 2008 – I traveled towards Owatonna, MN to Ellendale, MN as the wedding photographer for my clients Katie & Victor. I’m so happy to be a part of such great weddings, especially when the whole bridal party has a good time. It didn’t matter that the weather was little dreary as it was misting the whole way there and during the wedding ceremony.

However, a little mist & rain did not dampen the love these two have. The weather did not stop the wedding. It did not stop all the wedding guests from smiling or hugging the newlywed couple in their receiving line. Wouldn’t you know it, as we arrived at the Owatonna Country Club for the reception, the skies started to clear which allowed us to venture out on golf carts and make use of the beautiful golf course for some pictures.

And now for some of those wedding pictures! The altar had matching bouquets on each side which were nice and bright…

After the wedding, it was time to load into the limo and head for a little pre-celebration at a couple of pubs. This is when it became clear of the love between Katie & Victor. Always near each other’s side. A little hug or a kiss here & there. Still having a fun time with their friends & family in the bridal party – anyone could tell & see the love for one another each of them had…

Owatonna Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Of course when you have siblings involved, there’s usually a little bit of mischief. Katie’s brother and Victor’s sister were paired up as a couple during the wedding and they had everyone smiling in way or another…

Not that they were the only ones who made everyone laugh, those last two photos in particular caught my eye. A good time was had by all and by having the closest people in your life in your bridal party, chances are likely there will be many smiles and laughter to go around…

It was truly a special & fun wedding to photograph. Thank you Katie & Victor for having me as your wedding photographer! I wish you both many years of love & happiness!

Shawna & Kyle wedding photographer – Wayzata, Minnesota

September 6th, 2008 – I traveled to the Twin Cities metro area to Wayzata, MN to photograph the wedding of Shawna & Kyle at Wayzata Redeemer Lutheran Church. Before I get into photos from the day, I think everyone should know their story. It’s a love story 13 years in the making. Read for yourself as told on their wedding site…

13 years ago… Shawna’s story

When my favorite teacher, Mr. Althouse’s son walked through his classroom’s door… At 13 years old, I knew I was in love. Kyle was all I thought about, for years. Ask anyone! My mom still remembers me saying “I’m going to marry him”! Some would call it ‘obsessed’ I call it dedication :) The dark hair and dark eyes, made me melt. Any time I was around him, my heart fluttered like butterflies. Through all the years of such feelings and being too nervous to tell him, I never figured he felt the same. During my sophomore year of high school, my family announced we would be moving. By this time Kyle and I were pretty good friends, but the distance did us in- I let go of the dream that anything more would come to be. After the move and in to college, I heard from some mutual friends, his mom (our high school secretary), and Kyle once or twice. Even though the communication was lost, through the years, I never lost that feeling. No one compared to the boy I fell in love with so many years earlier.

13 years ago… Kyle’s story

Well, I’ll never be able to top Shawna’s story but here goes….

I think I first noticed Shawna in my dad’s classroom at some point during our 6th grade year. I will admit that I had no idea how to talk to a girl at that age. Well eventually over the years in middle school we started talking and hanging out together. I was to nervous to ever ask her to be my “girlfriend” at the time. This went on for years as I was hopefully waiting for her to ask me out, I know it’s pathetic, but it never did happen. Then came the big move. Shawna’s family moved to Rogers and I learned she was going to Elk River High School. I figured it wasn’t meant to be and I moved on. (Stupid huh) I did learn some things along the way about Shawna that she had failed to tell me before she moved away. During the time in middle school she had 1.Named our children 2.Practiced signing Shawna Althouse instead of Brunelle. 3.I’m sure she planned our wedding 100 different times. Well when I heard these things I just laughed. Little did I know…….

13 years later… told by Shawna

Rockin’ Rogers Days was the event we had all been looking forward to all summer. Single and not looking for love, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be running in to- you know who! I stopped dead in my tracks… my heart fluttered just like it had way back then! I even spilled my beer… I was close to speechless. I gave my mom my beer, drug my friend Cassidy with me… and walked over to Kyle. I don’t know where I got the nerve to do it! After a few minutes of re-connecting, he asked for my phone number. Texted me the next day to say how nice it was to see me and how he hoped we’d be able to keep in touch- for real this time. After a couple months of texts… We took a chance on the dream again.
Here we are 2 years later, living in our first home, and planning our wedding, 13 years in the making.
As many of you have heard me say… “Everything happens for a reason”
We know we have been put on this earth for one another, and we couldn’t be happier.

13 years later… told by Kyle

I still remember the day as if it were yesterday. A buddy and I decided to go see The Johnny Holm Band play up in Rogers. We were going up there with my sister and Brother-in-law. We were having a great time listening to music and drinking beer. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, someone tapped on my shoulder. I’m not gonna lie, when I first turned around and saw the most beautiful girl standing there, I was certain she was going to say “oops sorry I thought you were someone else.” By the time my brain was functioning again I realized who it was. I couldn’t beleive that after 10 years I was reunited with Shawna. There was a little small talk and to tell you the truth I wasn’t listening to a word she was saying. All I could think of was “You can’t let her slip away again….GET HER NUMBER!!” Well she gave me her number and I was almost certain she gave me a fake number. How could someone this beautiful actually give me her number. Well needless to say it was the right number and we texted back and forth for a couple months (which she hated) We finally decided to go on our “First Date” and I will admit after that I never wanted to be apart again.

I can’t tell you how much I am in love with Shawna! She is my world and always will be!! Somedays I still can’t beleive that I get to spend the rest of my life with her!

What a story, huh?!?! And with that, I share with you the photos of true love, 13 years in the making…

Jennifer & Brian wedding photographer – La Crosse, Wisconsin

August 30th, 2008 – I traveled south along the Mississippi River to St Paul’s Lutheran church in La Crosse, WI to photograph the wedding of Jennifer & Brian. Such a great couple and wedding to photograph. They chose not to see each other prior to the wedding and so I started with Jennifer and the bridesmaids as Jennifer was getting ready. I usually try to describe each wedding I shoot, but on this day of wedding photography, the pictures really do tell the story so I’ll let them do the talking…

I took a few bridal portraits of Jennifer before checking in on what the Brian & the guys were doing…

So what were the guys doing? Take a guess.

It was time for the wedding ceremony and here’s Jennifer’s brother & father seeing her for the first time…

La Crosse Wisconsin wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

The ceremony was beautiful and when it was done, Jennifer was so cute as she gave a little “bouquet pump” in the air. As they left the church, the wedding party threw rose pedals…

We headed up Grandad’s Bluff, which overlooks La Crosse, and stopped at the Alpine Inn for some drinks before arriving at the Radisson Hotel for the wedding reception. Before entering, we walked over to Riverside Park for some creative portraits of Jennifer & Brian. These two made my job as a wedding photographer easy. See for yourself…

As the wedding reception began, there was a real fun grand entrance and shortly afterwards, they began with the toasts & traditional wedding speeches. Brian had two best men and their speeches had plenty of laughs for not only Brian, but for the crowd as well…

Before the dance started, Jennifer & Brian snuck out with me to take advantage of a little break in the action as well as beautiful evening light in downtown La Crosse…

We headed back to the wedding reception and the dance started with a beautiful first dance “under the stars”…

and then the dance floor opened up to everyone…

Now I can’t leave without mentioning their DJ for the reception, Bob Viking. He was a blast! If you weren’t there, I’ll leave it up to you to wonder about these two things.

It was just a beautiful wedding to be the wedding photographer for and there was so much love throughout the whole day. Have a blast and love every second you are in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on your honeymoon, Jennifer & Brian. Thank you for allowing me to capture your love for each other on your wedding day.

Anna & Todd wedding photographer – Arkansaw, Wisconsin

August 23rd, 2008 – A little while ago I had received an email & phone call from a soft spoken bride-to-be who lived in Iowa. We spoke about the possibility of me shooting her wedding at a rural farm outside of Durand, Wisconsin. She had mentioned that it would be a very family orientated wedding in a private outdoor setting. I’ll admit, sometimes when at a wedding, I’ll see family members who feel the need to make suggestions on how the bride & groom should celebrate their day. Well, let me tell you – this was a very neat wedding to be a part of as the wedding photographer. To be able to see two families come together with so much love for two people was a special thing to be a part of & witness. In this wedding, family members had important roles in making sure the day celebration went smoothly for Anna & Todd.

As I arrived, the house was full of activity…

Wisconsin wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Once all the finishing touches were applied and all family members had arrived, we headed towards the ceremony site to start with some family portraits and formal wedding photos…

Wisconsin wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

As we left the house, a number of friends stayed to finish with preparing food for the wedding reception. We walked down a path by the cornfields which opened up to a pasture which was cleared out for the reception.  When we arrived, some of Anna’s brothers were spreading sawdust on the damp pathway…

Past the wedding ceremony site, located in a quiet section of woods, the scene opened up to a beautiful yard with flowers and a perfect view of the area…

While waiting for the wedding ceremony to begin, Todd’s mother & Anna shared a moment together…

It truly was a beautiful location, along with beautiful weather, for an outdoor wedding…

Todd’s daughters looked so cute in their flower girl dresses…

The wedding ceremony was filled with singing, prayer and love. Probably one of the more memorable ceremonies I’ve attended…

After the wedding, we headed back to the pasture for the reception and filling the air was beautiful live music…

Jessica & Dave wedding photographer – La Crosse, Wisconsin

August 15th, 2008 – I headed downriver again to La Crosse, WI for Friday’s wedding at the Roncalli Newman Center on the UW-La Crosse campus. It really was a great day to get outside and take some outdoor pictures too. The weather was “picture perfect”.

Jessica & Dave chose not to see each other prior to the wedding ceremony so I started with Jessica and her bridesmaids first. We had to keep it short outside as Dave was to show up any minute. Here’s a nice black & white portrait of the ladies in front of the Roncalli Newman Center…

La Crosse wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After about an hour of photos, Jessica had to go downstairs to hide as I was going to finish up portraits with Dave & his groomsmen before the ceremony started. Here’s an enhanced, fun photo of the guys taken in the alley…

After finishing up with pictures, Dave waited for the start of the ceremony in a separate room near the sanctuary . Jessica and her bridesmaids waited & added last-minute finishing touches downstairs until it was time for the wedding to begin. Here’s a glimpse of Jessica coming upstairs as the bridal party looks on in this black & white photo…

As the wedding ceremony began, there was a few tears shed but lots of happiness as well. The officiant had their full attention during the ceremony…

After the wedding ceremony, they snuck away and were all smiles as they headed downstairs…

La Crosse wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After formal family & bridal pictures, we headed across the street to the UW-La Crosse campus to take some photos near the location where they first met. I think it’s really special to incorporate those little things with my client’s photos. Sometimes what seems insignificant to one, can be very significant to another. On the way back, we got a nice shot with the ceremony site in the background…

La Crosse wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

We then headed through La Crosse to make a few more stops at different locations for some unique wedding photos before heading to Pettibone Resort for their reception…

La Crosse wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After the dinner, toasts, speeches, some more outdoor portraits and a few family shots – it was time for the dance to begin. They started with the father/daughter & mother/son dance which led into Jessica & Dave’s first dance together as husband & wife. It was very nice moment for them…

La Crosse wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

All in all, it was a great wedding to be apart of. I thank you both, Jessica & Dave, for having me share your wedding with you as your wedding photographer. I hope you both are enjoying the nice, sandy beaches of Florida as I type this!! Congrats again & I wish you the best!

Kristin & Clark wedding photographer – Lanesboro & Winona, MN

August 8th, 2008 – Last year, there was July 7th, 2007 (lucky 7’s), well this year it was August 8th, 2008 – lucky 8’s perhaps!?! This past Friday, I headed to historic town of Lanesboro, Minnesota to meet with my wedding clients to take their wedding portraits all over the picturesque Lanesboro downtown prior to their wedding ceremony. We planned to meet at a nearby park for their “first sight” pictures, as they hadn’t seen each other prior and we went from there…

After a little tap on the shoulder, the expression on Clark’s face was priceless as he saw his beautiful bride, Kristin, for the first time…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

These two were all smiles, all day long…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

We then headed towards the downtown to take advantage of the beautiful weather and historic backdrops. Theres an old bridge over the Root River, used for the many miles of bike trails, which also made for a perfect backdrop on this enhanced portrait…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

While walking together downtown, we came across this storefront sign, which was perfect for the occasion. Check out Clark’s expression!

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

There was many tourists and locals downtown and I mentioned to them that all eyes would be on them. Its probably not everyday that two people, dressed as they were, are seen around Lanesboro. We had joked around about how the downtown shoot would unfold and I had made the comment that we were going to stop traffic. Check out this traffic stopping kiss in the middle of an intersection which drew applause from all the bystanders…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

We went everywhere we possibly could before we had to head to the church for the ceremony. But these two were so lucky to have such a beautiful backdrop for their wedding pictures…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After the formal wedding & family photos, it was almost time for the ceremony. Here’s a glimpse of Kristin’s calla lily bouquet and beautiful dress with bow…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

The ceremony was held at a little church, nestled in the rural Minnesota countryside, at the Elstad Lutheran Church. They had chose to have a candlelit service and after lighting their unity candle, the same flame from their candle was passed on, one by one, and lit every guest’s candle. It was a very cool sight to see & witness…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After the ceremony and grand exit to the awaiting limo, we headed to the wedding reception which was held at Visions Event Center at Signatures Restaurant located on the Bridges Golf Club course in Winona, MN. We got a chance to take some more outdoor photos as the sun was setting…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After everyone got a chance to get some food and have a drink (or two), it was time for the speeches & toasts. Here’s a great moment of Kristin & Clark’s response to a comment made by Clark’s father. (you had to be there!)

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Next thing you knew, it was time for their first dance. As great as all first dances are – theirs was no different. It was also sealed with a kiss…

Lanesboro & Winona MN wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Such a beautiful day, with a beautiful wedding, beautiful locations and a beautiful couple in love. It doesn’t get any better or beautiful than that. Thank you, Kristin & Clark, for allowing to be a part of your beautiful wedding as your wedding photographer. I wish you both the best!

Elizabeth & Justin wedding photographer – La Crosse, Wisconsin

August 2nd, 2009 – This past Saturday, I was the wedding photographer for Elizabeth & Justin in at English Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. I tell ya… it was a beautiful day for a wedding and it couldn’t have happened for two nicer people. They’ve got a bunch of pictures of which I took! There was so many little moments that couldn’t be missed, so I did my best to get them all.

They did not want to see each other prior to the wedding, I started with Elizabeth with the bridesmaids in their dressing room. There’s this dry erase board in there which is always fun for me to see at each wedding I shoot at English Lutheran as the bridesmaids always write something fun on there…

Elizabeth had a beautiful dress as well as a tiara. Everyone was making sure Elizabeth was looking ever so stunning on her wedding day…

Natalie & Micah wedding photographer – Winona, Minnesota

July 26th, 2008 – This past wedding was close to home – right here in Winona, Minnesota. Natalie & Micah’s wedding ceremony was held at the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels, which is definitely a place to visit if you’re ever in Winona, MN and like to check out architecture. I shot the engagement photos for Natalie & Micah here at Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels as well. The church is beautiful and this wedding was a perfect fit. Natalie was lovely in her lace wedding dress & long veil trimmed with lace. The colors for the wedding were a light green & dark brown with light blue highlights from the hydrangea flowers.

They kept it traditional and decided not to see each other prior to the wedding ceremony. I started with Natalie and the bridesmaids. But enough of my rambling, I’ll let the wedding photography do the talking!

Here’s a photo of Natalie’s veil I got while she and the bridesmaids were getting ready…

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

and as I mentioned in my previous post about their wedding, the church is a sight to see – inside and out. Here we have the lovely Natalie posing for a few shots around the inside of the church…

Micah was looking sharp as well…

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

So after getting through all the formal wedding photos, the room where Natalie got ready, in Alverna Hall, was a perfect place for some more casual & unique bridal portraits. This is one of my favorites…

This one shows you the detail of her dress…

After some last minute preparations, it was time for the ceremony to begin. It was a beautiful ceremony…

I love this shot between the two of them stating their vows to each other…

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Rings were exchanged and after the kiss they had a receiving line to meet all of their guests. Waiting outside were those guests waiting with bubbles as they made their exit!

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

We finished up with the family & bridal party photos and finished with Natalie & Micah’s portraits. I figured since we took the engagement photos here, we may as well update some of the poses used with wedding photos! Here’s a cute one…

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

and we had a little fun re-creating an older style of wedding portrait, with a little “American Gothic” feel to it without the pitchfork, enhanced to fit the mood… of course we had a few laughs making it though : )

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

and the nice looking shoes that were literally becoming a pain for Natalie, since they were coming off as soon as they could, I had to shot those too!

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After getting those shoes off and the dress bustled, we were off to Signatures Restaurant & Visions Event Center located on the Bridges Golf Club on the outskirts of Winona. Their wedding cake was very unique!

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Cocktail hour & hor D’oeuvres were served first, then dinner with speeches & toasts and the cake cutting. Then Micah & Natalie had some cigars to share outside with anyone who wanted them. There was quite the group outside the bar…

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After that, it was time for the dance to start, of course with a very tender first dance between Natalie & Micah…

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

then came the father/daughter & mother/son dance and then the dance floor opened up to everyone!

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Once again, as usual, this was another great wedding to be a part of as the wedding photographer. Thank you Natalie & Micah and if there’s one thing that everyone could come away with from your wedding, it would be “All You Need Is Love”…

Winona Minnesota wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Congratulations again to you both! I wish you both the best!!
