Jennifer & Brian wedding photographer – La Crosse, Wisconsin

August 30th, 2008 – I traveled south along the Mississippi River to St Paul’s Lutheran church in La Crosse, WI to photograph the wedding of Jennifer & Brian. Such a great couple and wedding to photograph. They chose not to see each other prior to the wedding and so I started with Jennifer and the bridesmaids as Jennifer was getting ready. I usually try to describe each wedding I shoot, but on this day of wedding photography, the pictures really do tell the story so I’ll let them do the talking…

I took a few bridal portraits of Jennifer before checking in on what the Brian & the guys were doing…

So what were the guys doing? Take a guess.

What else does a groom do when getting ready for his wedding?

He shoots hoops….

It was time for the wedding ceremony and here’s Jennifer’s brother & father seeing her for the first time…

The ceremony was beautiful and when it was done, Jennifer was so cute as she gave a little “bouquet pump” in the air. As they left the church, the wedding party threw rose pedals…

We headed up Grandad’s Bluff, which overlooks La Crosse, and stopped at the Alpine Inn for some drinks before arriving at the Radisson Hotel for the wedding reception. Before entering, we walked over to Riverside Park for some creative portraits of Jennifer & Brian. These two made my job as a wedding photographer easy. See for yourself…

As the wedding reception began, there was a real fun grand entrance and shortly afterwards, they began with the toasts & traditional wedding speeches. Brian had two best men and their speeches had plenty of laughs for not only Brian, but for the crowd as well…

Before the dance started, Jennifer & Brian snuck out with me to take advantage of a little break in the action as well as beautiful evening light in downtown La Crosse…

We headed back to the wedding reception and the dance started with a beautiful first dance “under the stars”…

and then the dance floor opened up to everyone…

Now I can’t leave without mentioning their DJ for the reception, Bob Viking. He was a blast! If you weren’t there, I’ll leave it up to you to wonder about these two things.

It was just a beautiful wedding to be the wedding photographer for and there was so much love throughout the whole day. Have a blast and love every second you are in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on your honeymoon, Jennifer & Brian. Thank you for allowing me to capture your love for each other on your wedding day.

Emily & Doug engagement portrait photographer – La Crosse, WI

August 3rd, 2008 – Twelve hours after Saturday’s wedding in La Crosse, WI – I headed back to La Crosse to meet one of my 2009 wedding clients at Riverside Park to shoot their engagement portrait session. Engagement sessions are pretty different than the actual wedding day as we are not necessarily rushed for time, nor is their time schedules we need to deal with and usually don’t worry about getting a little dirty from sitting on the ground/etc. It can be a lot of fun and a lot less stressful. I feel its a great way to accomplish two main things – creating beautiful portraits of a couple in which they most likely don’t have & capturing that feeling of love between those two people through my photography.

I’m going to post four enhanced photos that I feel capture the love, and all of its emotion, between Emily & Doug…

Melanie & Brian wedding photographer – Winona, MN

July 12th, 2008 – As I had mentioned before, the wedding from this past Saturday was beautiful. With the wedding ceremony taking place on the campus of Winona State University at the Alumni Gazebo, surrounded by some of the best landscaping you’ll see in Winona – paver walkways, coy pond, with numerous flower plots, under perfect weather consisting of bright blue skies, wispy clouds, a bright shining sun and on top of that was a great bridal party with each of the bridesmaids wearing different pastel colors matching the groomsmen vests.

All of that and I haven’t even gotten to the most important, brightest part of the day – the bride & groom! They both attended & graduated from WSU with education majors. As nice as these two were, I know they’ll make great teachers! Melanie already teaches for a nearby local elementary school.

Enough of my rambling again – the pictures will speak for themselves of this beautiful wedding…

The flowers nice and bright from Nola’s Flowers here in Winona, decorated with Melanie’s favorite little bug – butterflies…

*please note* – the rest of the photos posted, I’ve added a nice, warm, digital enhancement photo treatment which I’ve created, I hope you enjoy!

They both decided to see each other prior to the wedding and we managed to get most of the portraits done prior to the ceremony…

After the wedding portraits, it was time for the ceremony to begin. Everyone was patiently waiting…

As I mentioned before, it was just a beautiful day and the Alumni Gazebo made an equally beautiful location for a wedding …

After the ceremony, we took some time to create some more unique wedding portraits. This one is different than most you’ll see, but I like the effect and wanted to share…

We then headed to the Riverport Inn & Suites here in Winona for the reception. The main thing that stood out was the cake – they used a bunch of cupcakes, so everyone had their own little wedding cake…

Even though I was there for only a short time, it was a wonderful wedding for me to be apart of and wish you both the best of futures together, Melanie & Brian! Thank you for having me as your wedding photographer!

Maria & Francis wedding photographer – La Crosse, WI

June 14, 2008 – Saturday’s wedding was held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. This was another great wedding to be a part of and to photograph! This couple was great, as was their bridal party, the church had some neat locations for photos (which you’ll see soon!) and the weather was perfect. We had plenty of time for photos before & after the ceremony as Maria & Francis decided not to see each other before the ceremony. And on that note…

…here we have the lucky groom, Francis, and his groomsmen…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After that, Francis was sent downstairs so he didn’t see Maria as I photographed her and the bridesmaids. Here’s a photo I like which was caught at just the right moment…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

I started with Maria to get some beautiful bridal portraits of her. Remember I mentioned that there was some cool locations at the church? Well, there was this wall, made of completely glass block, that I had to get some photos by. Here are some of my favorites from there with a little post processing done…

And here we have Maria and her wonderful bridesmaids…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

If you’ve checked out some of my wedding photography from past weddings, you’ll know that I’ve had pets (basically just dogs – never had any cats, etc…) that were incorporated into the wedding. Maria & Francis have a Bullmastiff, Cody (hope I spelled it right, but he makes my Boxer look puny!) bring the rings down the aisle during the ceremony. Here’s when he showed up prior to the ceremony as Francis looks on…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

And then it was time for the ceremony and when Maria walked down the aisle, the stained glass windows on the side of the church created an awesome effect on her & her veil. She was most definitely in the spotlight…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Their wedding ceremony was nice, with live acoustic guitar music solos, personalized poems and their dog bringing the rings as he did when Francis proposed, it made the ceremony even more special for them. After the ceremony we got through the family portraits & wedding party photos and then it was time for some photos of just the two of them.

The wedding reception was being held at the La Crosse Center Ballroom and before going there, we headed to Riverside Park and created some awesome outdoor photos. These next two photos have been post processed, but they make use of Maria’s beautiful veil…

…that last one’s smokin hot!!

Then we were off to the La Crosse Center Ballroom for the reception and here’s a photo I have to share of the Best Man’s speech that he wrote prior to the ceremony. He said he worked real hard on it and showed it to the crowd. He was cracking everyone up…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

After the dinner, there was a slideshow and then it was time for the first dance. Another special moment as well…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Then the party got started with a little help from Maria and her friends…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

…even the little ones were gettin’ down…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

A little later, they had the Grand March, which led to the bouquet & garter toss. Francis had to shake his stuff to the song “The Stripper”, by David Rose, before being allowed to attempt to remove the garter. Made for some fun photos too…
La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Maria had a surprise in store for Francis (which I knew about – sorry Francis!) for when he did the traditional removal of her garter. Apparently, he has some cowboy boots which she don’t like, so she was going to pay him back by surprising him with some boots of her own. His expression was priceless and the guests loved every second of it…

It was a long day of wedding photography, but it was well worth it. I was glad I was able to be of service to you both as your wedding photographer and wish you both safe trip to Mexico along with a long, happy, healthy future together!

Congrats to you both Maria & Francis!

I have to share this.

Most of you probably won’t get the chance to be slobbered or jumped up on by my dog, Bugsy. There are a few of my clients out there who have. (sorry again everyone! lol)

But as most of my family and friends know, Bugsy never ceases to make you smile. (or really get on your nerves)

Yesterday, I took a photo of Bugsy and its now my new desktop background. I hope you like it…

Wedding photo enhancement example – 0707140526

I tend to get questions regarding photo enhancements, so here’s one example of how digital enhancements can change the mood of a photo. Let’s take this wedding photo I took at a Rockford, MN wedding in July 2007.

Here is the SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) photo:

Wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Looks pretty good! Many clients and viewers would agree on that. But let’s make it look even better – let’s go for a more dramatic look. With some different enhancements done with one or more editing programs, a little skill and some time, we can give the wedding portrait a more dramatic look like this:

Dramatic wedding photo enhancement

Now, I can take it even one more step further. Let’s turn this dramatic wedding portrait into its own artistic work of art. There would be multiple different ways to go about creating an original work of art, but I won’t go into the details. I could talk forever about that… so, without further ado – the finished piece:

Wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Now, I can understand everyone has different tastes and I’m cool with that. The main point is, you don’t need to settle for “just” a photograph taken by me. I can turn a photograph into a one-of-a-kind, original work of art for you and your loved ones to cherish for a lifetime.

If you should have any questions or interest in this, just let me know! I’d be more than happy to discuss your options!

High school senior portrait with ATTITUDE – not like your parent’s senior portrait!

Ok, the following senior portrait is a combination of me joking around during the senior portrait shoot and then having the senior thinking it would be a cool idea!

This is a another shot of a senior from the Winona High School student who is also a very talented musician that plays the drums. While he was drumming, I had him create some movement while he played and started to play some hardcore beats. We’re not talking Sinatra here, we’re talking more like Korn, Rage Against the Machine or Slipknot. So as he thrashed on the drums, I snapped a number of photos.

As I checked the end results, the movement of his head created a surreal look – almost like he could be breathing fire or something along those lines. I mentioned this to him as I showed him the photo in the camera and he said, “Do it!” Well, myself having a few Photoshop tricks up my sleeve, I did. Here’s the end result:

Now I know that this isn’t for everyone, but it was right up this high school senior’s alley. This was his favorite photo I created for him. I look forward to creating more custom portraits for my future senior portrait clients! With or without the fire!

2008 Bowl For Kid’s Sake photos with a touch of my own

As I prepare the photos to send to the ad agency for preparation of the promotional posters for the 2008 Bowl for Kid’s Sake fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Winona, I thought I’d add my own unique touch to really make the photos “pop”. I use a number of different post-processing techniques and I feel that the photos are much more striking because of it. Now, whether or not the ad agency uses them for the posters, that’s to be determined – however, it would be nice to see a distinctive photo relay an important message.

Compare my “finished” version compared to the regular version. I’d love to hear any comments that anyone may have!

Custom high school Senior portrait – Winona, MN

In January, I shot an outdoor high school senior portrait for a winter theme here in Winona, MN. It was pretty cold outside, so we didn’t have much time. I’m posting a final processed portrait with a texture applied to give the photo a more creative, modern look that my senior photography clients are looking for in their prints.

Finished custom high school senior portrait – Winona, MN

At the end of January, I had the opportunity to explore some different portrait & photo post processing techniques while taking some senior portraits with a high school senior portrait client here in Winona, MN.

The senior is a very talented musician and he has his own drum set at home. I knew this ahead of time and I wanted to do a senior portrait that fit his style and that pushed the envelope of your typical senior portrait.

I’m not talking the old-school Olan Mills style of headshot, with the oval-shaped side profile photo in the upper corner, that probably most senior’s parents had taken when they graduated high school. I’m talking a distinctive, powerful pose and post-processed treated photo that matched the sound of the high-hats, cymbals, snare and pounding of the double bass.

I’m interested in hearing what other senior’s interests are so I can come up with their own striking, one-of-a-kind high school senior portrait.
