Bekky & Mike | La Crosse, WI wedding

When you love someone, that love should be permanent.

Just like the tattoos that Bekky & Mike have. They even got matching tattoos during their honeymoon to observe the date that they married. I think that’s pretty sweet.

It was pretty hot the day of their wedding and everyone made it through it just fine. The heat didn’t prevent them from having a great time with other, just as a wedding should be.

As we awaited for the last few members of the wedding party, I thought that would be a great time to get some nice portraits of Bekky. I felt her choices of colors were a perfect match for her look…

Vanessa & Andy | Minnesota & Wisconsin wedding photographer

June 20th, 2009 – For my second wedding of the weekend, I was back in Minnesota in La Crescent for the wedding ceremony at the La Crescent United Methodist Church and then over to La Crosse, Wisconsin for the reception.

I first met Vanessa & Andy here in Winona at the Acoustic Cafe and knew that they would be fun couple to shoot. They are fun & outgoing and they have a little daughter who is just darling. We then met up a few months later for their engagement pictures and I knew that they and their wedding day would make some great photos.

Did I happen to mention that they had ten people on each side for their bridal party? Big and super fun!! The more, the merrier – right?!

I started with Andy and the guys first as he and Vanessa did not want to see each other prior to the wedding. After taking the guy’s photos, they were going to leave the church and come back for the start of the ceremony. Before we finished, I saw their daughter for the first time and all dressed up and ready to go…

Soon after, I went into the ladies dressing room to get some shots of Vanessa getting her dress on and her final preparations before taking her & the bridesmaids’ formals. Once we finished, it was time for the four kids to receive their gifts for being part of the wedding. It was like Christmas time…

While waiting for the ceremony, Vanessa & her mother shared a touching moment and had to fight back tears…

During the ceremony, the kids were very well behaved!

Other than some unexpected orange socks (hilarious – by the way), the ceremony went perfectly. After family & bridal party portraits, Vanessa got bustled up before heading to a local bar for some pre-reception drinks & fun…

After some photos at Riverside Park, we arrived at the La Crosse Center Ballroom for their wedding reception. Before cutting the cake, Andy learned not to mess with Vanessa.

Ever.

Not too long after, it was time for the dance to begin. Their first dance was beautiful…

Then it was Vanessa’s turn to dance with her father, who just finished reading a poem to her, which he wrote himself.

The dollar dance was fun to watch. In the end, Vanessa received more money and the Matron of Honor rubbed it in to the Best Man…

Things were really getting fun after the Grand March…

The garter removal and toss were fun to watch as well – check out the socks…

After a full ten hours of shooting and fun it was time for me to go, but it really was a great day. Perhaps we’ll run into each other in La Crescent again. I wish you both the best, Vanessa & Andy. I hope you both never forget the love you felt on this day. May each day be filled with fun & even more love…

Abby & Luke wedding photographer | La Crosse, Wisconsin

Let me start this post about last weekend’s wedding by saying…

Thank you to all of the brave Americans who serve our country in the United States Armed Forces. From the newly enlisted, to active duty, currently deployed, to the veterans and to the fallen – I thank you for your service and for protecting the freedoms our wonderful country provides us.

If you haven’t thanked a member of the military lately, next time you see one – do so.

As a wedding photographer, I really strive to document the wedding day as it unfolds. At the same time, as a visual artist, I am always looking for unique situations and locations to create the imagery you see on my website. Having clients who understand this, who allow me to have the creative freedom to do what I do, is everything a photographer can ask for. Last Saturday’s wedding of Abby & Luke provided those things and so much more. To list off a few of the reasons:

  • First – they were clients who wanted the creative imagery and truly appreciate the work I provide.
  • Second – they booked & allowed enough time to document the wedding day schedule.
  • Third – planned a schedule which had a number of different stops at very different locations which keeps the ideas fresh & spontaneous, but at the same time – keeps it fun for the members of the wedding party. OK – it included Harley-Davidson motorcycles and monster trucks!
  • Fourth – WONDERFUL wedding party and family.
  • Lastly, and most important of all – Abby & Luke are two people so very deeply in love with each other… that’s the most beautiful thing of all.

Luke is member of the United States Army and a veteran of the Iraq War. He dressed in the US Army dress blue uniform for the wedding ceremony. It was nice to see a groom, not only proud of his service to our country by wearing his proper military attire, but to be in love at the same time. It was sort of an interesting attraction visual opposites. You’ve got the rough, rugged & strong image of an army soldier paired with a beautiful, delicate & ornate image of the bride…

Erica & Dustin wedding photographer – La Crescent, Minnesota & La Crosse, Wisconsin

January 3rd, 2009 – First, let me start by saying – what a great couple these two make. Two great people in love who surrounded themselves with great people on their wedding day. Second, even though the weather took a turn for the worse, they never stopped smiling at each other. Standing by each other’s side most of the day after the wedding ceremony. It was really something to witness. Even after knowing that they’ve been together for quite some time now – I could see the love they have for each other. What a great thing…

They decided not to see each other before the ceremony so we took turns taking pictures of Dustin & the groomsmen and Erica & her bridesmaids. Erica’s wedding dress was very ornate…

Behind the Scenes of a wedding photographer from June 2008

Thank you to the number of family & friends who have supplied & allowed me to use their own wedding pictures to use in my “Behind the Scenes” pages. It’s nice to see different perspectives between multiple photos taken at or close to the same time.

Here’s a wedding photo from June 2008 taken by wonderful wedding guest & reader, Taylor Addington, a friend of my clients – Maria & Fran. It was taken at the wedding reception at the La Crosse Center Ballroom during the garter removal. The story behind the photo is Maria always gave Fran a hard time about wearing his own cowboy boots. Without him knowing, she managed to put on some cowboy boots of her own to surprise him during the garter removal. Truly a fun moment for everyone at the wedding reception! Check out Fran’s reaction! Priceless!!

If you, or you know of someone who may have some wedding photos with me working, let me know! I’d love to feature them here!

Maria & Francis wedding photographer – La Crosse, WI

June 14, 2008 – Saturday’s wedding was held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. This was another great wedding to be a part of and to photograph! This couple was great, as was their bridal party, the church had some neat locations for photos (which you’ll see soon!) and the weather was perfect. We had plenty of time for photos before & after the ceremony as Maria & Francis decided not to see each other before the ceremony. And on that note…

…here we have the lucky groom, Francis, and his groomsmen…

After that, Francis was sent downstairs so he didn’t see Maria as I photographed her and the bridesmaids. Here’s a photo I like which was caught at just the right moment…

I started with Maria to get some beautiful bridal portraits of her. Remember I mentioned that there was some cool locations at the church? Well, there was this wall, made of completely glass block, that I had to get some photos by. Here are some of my favorites from there with a little post processing done…

And here we have Maria and her wonderful bridesmaids…

If you’ve checked out some of my wedding photography from past weddings, you’ll know that I’ve had pets (basically just dogs – never had any cats, etc…) that were incorporated into the wedding. Maria & Francis have a Bullmastiff, Cody (hope I spelled it right, but he makes my Boxer look puny!) bring the rings down the aisle during the ceremony. Here’s when he showed up prior to the ceremony as Francis looks on…

And then it was time for the ceremony and when Maria walked down the aisle, the stained glass windows on the side of the church created an awesome effect on her & her veil. She was most definitely in the spotlight…

La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Their wedding ceremony was nice, with live acoustic guitar music solos, personalized poems and their dog bringing the rings as he did when Francis proposed, it made the ceremony even more special for them. After the ceremony we got through the family portraits & wedding party photos and then it was time for some photos of just the two of them.

The wedding reception was being held at the La Crosse Center Ballroom and before going there, we headed to Riverside Park and created some awesome outdoor photos. These next two photos have been post processed, but they make use of Maria’s beautiful veil…

…that last one’s smokin hot!!

Then we were off to the La Crosse Center Ballroom for the reception and here’s a photo I have to share of the Best Man’s speech that he wrote prior to the ceremony. He said he worked real hard on it and showed it to the crowd. He was cracking everyone up…

After the dinner, there was a slideshow and then it was time for the first dance. Another special moment as well…

Then the party got started with a little help from Maria and her friends…

…even the little ones were gettin’ down…

A little later, they had the Grand March, which led to the bouquet & garter toss. Francis had to shake his stuff to the song “The Stripper”, by David Rose, before being allowed to attempt to remove the garter. Made for some fun photos too…
La Crosse WI wedding photographer | Shannon Porter Photography

Maria had a surprise in store for Francis (which I knew about – sorry Francis!) for when he did the traditional removal of her garter. Apparently, he has some cowboy boots which she don’t like, so she was going to pay him back by surprising him with some boots of her own. His expression was priceless and the guests loved every second of it…

It was a long day of wedding photography, but it was well worth it. I was glad I was able to be of service to you both as your wedding photographer and wish you both safe trip to Mexico along with a long, happy, healthy future together!

Congrats to you both Maria & Francis!

La Crosse WI wedding photography today – 080614

I’m getting ready to go to La Crosse WI to photograph a wedding at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and then to the La Crosse Center for the wedding reception afterwards. There’s a chance of rain, but there’s a better chance of some smoking hot wedding photography!! Check back soon as I’ll be getting last Sunday’s La Crosse wedding posted, as well as today’s wedding.

This past Saturday – May 3rd, 2008 – I was in La Crosse, WI for the wedding of Aimee & Travis. As I mentioned previously, the weather wasn’t looking the greatest. However, before the wedding ceremony started, the rain stayed away, the clouds parted, the sun came out and made for a beautiful & fun wedding for all the family & friends who were a part of the wedding.

Aimee & Travis decided not to see each other prior to the wedding, so I started with the guys first. Here we have Travis looking pretty darn sharp…

and after getting all the guy’s portraits done, we brought in the proud fathers… Travis’s dad had a little fun…

Meanwhile, the beautiful bride and bridesmaids were busy becoming even more beautiful…

and then it was time for their portraits to be taken. English Lutheran Church is a modern, but classy church. Here’s Aimee by one of the stained glass windows.

at the same time, Travis was keeping his cool…

Despite any last minute nerves, not to mention a loved one being involved in a car accident prior to the ceremony – the wedding went on without any issues (other than Travis crossing his eyes at Aimee during the vows) and it was time to celebrate!! We headed down to Riverside Park in La Crosse, next to the Mississippi River.

We then headed to Piggy’s Restaurant, also in La Crosse, which was where Travis proposed to Aimee. Which in turn, equaled even more celebration…

Travis’s mother had many reasons to celebrate as well – she was in the car accident. She was so proud of her son and very thankful to have Aimee as a daughter. I could tell she is a wonderful woman…

I know, you’re probably wondering, “when do we get to see a “real” photo of the bride??” Well, patience is a virtue and here we have our beautiful bride, Aimee.

Like, woah… huh?!?!

We then headed to the La Crosse Center Ballroom where the reception was held. The cake matched Aimee’s dress. Very cool.

Both fathers had moving speeches as Aimee’s dad finally got a son and Travis’s dad finally got a daughter… pretty neat…

And then the party began and I know fun was had by all. After a full day of shooting I mingled around for a little bit (I know Travis, not as long as you wanted…) but you both make an awesome couple, your families & friends were great and I can tell there will many, many more happy days in your future. I know you both have a busy few weeks, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek. I hope you enjoy as much as I enjoyed being your wedding photographer.

Congratulations, Aimee & Travis!!!
